If You Need To Put
together a Photographer Resume...
you likely already know that competition is going to be
keen in your upcoming job search. The good news is that jobs
for commercial photographers is expected to grow 12% over the
coming decade. Much of that growth can be attributed to the
growth in Web versions of newspapers, magazines and journals -
requiring increasing numbers of commercial photographers to
satisfy the demand for digital images.
Temper that, however, with the fact that the same internet -
and advances in digital technology - is making it far
easier freelancers and amateurs to enter the marketplace.
That's good if you wish to be self-employed; not so good if
you're looking for a staff photographer position with an
advertising agency, newspaper or other print publishing
company.
Bottom line: salaried jobs in photography are going to be
harder and harder to find as more and more companies contract
with a growing pool of freelancers rather than hire their own
in-house photographers. Increasingly, many resumes competing
for those salaried jobs are being written by
professional resume services. Should yours be written
by a pro? Well...
The Certified Professional
Resume Writer Has 4 Advantages When Crafting A
Photographer Resume
The professional resume writer brings some advantages to the
game right off the bat. You'll need to match these advantages,
or compensate in other ways, if you plan to write your own
resume.
- The professional resume writer keeps abreast of
current resume techniques; format selection, design and
layout, what information a hiring manager
wants - and doesn't want - to see on
a photographer resume.
- The pro has industry experience that is both perceptive
and objective. As a side note, the better resume
services are often able to pair you with a
writer whose background matches your specific
professional discipline.
- The pro knows how to work with "keywords."
When used strategically, these ensure your resume will pop
up in database searches.
- They're marketing pros. There's a real skill in
selling a job candidate with nothing more than words on a
page.
No Doubt, You
Can Write A Photographer Resume...
As a former resume writer, I can say without a doubt that
each and every one of my clients, from every professional walk
of life, could have crafted a resume themselves that
could have been competitive in the marketplace. And that
includes clients in commercial photography. But they came to me
because they didn't have the time or the inclination to get up to
speed on resume techniques. Or they found that their job
qualifications were difficult for them to express in a
promotional -- and unbiased -- manner.
If you're a photographer who falls into either
category, you've got plenty of company. And you've probably
noticed there are a lot of resume services popping up to take
advantage of these economic times. I've tried to separate
the good from the not-so-good when it comes to professional
resume writers. I personally hope you'll take a look at our
