If You Need To Put
together A Writer Resume...
you likely already know how tough the job market is in the
overall economy. Ditto for jobs in writing. In fact, new jobs
for writers are expected to grow at 8% over the next decade -
that's about the average for all occupations.
On the positive side, salaried writing positions are
expected to increase slightly as more and more companies
embrace new technologies and explore online media to reach
target audiences. Hint: if you're not already there, get
yourself comfortable with the Web, and the variety of
electronic and digital tools that are rapidly becoming the
stock and trade of the multi-media writer.
On the down side, traditional publishers - especially those
that remain dependent on print advertising to support large
writing staffs, like old line newspapers and magazines -
will be employing fewer of those writers.
Bottom line: with an industry in transition and a profession
with a high ease of entry, competition will remain keen for
salaried writer jobs. Increasingly, many resumes competing
for those jobs are being written by professional
resume services. Should yours be written by a pro?
Well...
The Professional Resume
Writer Has 4 Advantages When Crafting
A Writer Resume
The professional resume writer brings some advantages to the
game right off the bat. You'll need to match these advantages,
or compensate in other ways, if you plan to write your own
resume.
- The professional resume writer keeps abreast of
current resume techniques; format selection, design and
layout, what information a managing editor wants
- and doesn't want - to see on
a writer resume.
- The pro has industry experience that is both perceptive
and objective. As a side note, the better resume
services are often able to pair you with a
writer whose background matches your specific
professional discipline.
- The pro knows how to work with "keywords."
When used strategically, these ensure your resume will pop
up in database searches.
- They're marketing pros. There's a real skill in
selling a job candidate to an often cynical audience
(i.e. hiring officials in the media and publishing
industries) with nothing more than words on a page.
Ready To Write
That Writer Resume?
As a former resume writer, I can say without a doubt that
each and every one of my clients, from every professional walk
of life, could have crafted a resume themselves that
could have been competitive in the marketplace. And that
includes clients in salaried writer positions. But they came to
me because they didn't have the time or the inclination to get up to
speed on resume techniques. Or they found that their job
qualifications were difficult for them to express in a
promotional -- and unbiased -- manner.
If you're a writer who falls into either category, you've
got plenty of company. And you've probably noticed there are a
lot of resume services popping up to take advantage of these
economic times. I've tried to separate the good from the
not-so-good when it comes to professional resume writers. I
personally hope you'll take a look at our Resume
Service Reviews, a lineup of mini-reviews
of the more popular resume writing services on the web.
I show their pricing points, and give each one a star
